Negative Calorie Diet

The Negative Calorie Diet is based on the premise that calories are expended during the body's digestive process. While all foods have some calorie count associated with them, some foods require more calories to digest than they actually have. The term "negative calories" characterizes the overall effect of digesting these foods.

The Negative Calorie Diet is based on scientific research that accounts for over 100 foods requiring more calories to be burned during the digestive process than were present in the food itself. The advantage being that the body must expend some of its stored fat to assist in the digestive process, thus, creating a natural fat burning process that leads to weight loss.

The amount of calories expended during the digestive process is dependant upon one's metabolism. The diet encourages manipulation of one's metabolism to force the body to burn fat 24 hours per day.

Who created the Negative Calorie Diet?

The Negative Calorie diet's author is unknown. The diet is distributed online through e-books.

Medical Studies

Although there have been no large-scale studies to examine the effectiveness of the Negative Calorie diet, several studies have examined the health impact of a diet consisting largely of fruits and vegetables. According to a study performed by Dr. Dean Ornish, M.D., of the University of California, at San Francisco, a vegetarian diet consisting mostly of fruits and vegetables, was adhered to by research subjects as an experimental study on the reversal of heart disease. As a result, each of the research subjects (all suffering from heart disease) lost an average of 20 pounds without cutting calories or limiting serving sizes.

Despite the fact that the subjects were 40 years and older (with relatively slowed metabolisms) and the research involved no prescribed exercise program, a dramatic weight loss, that could only be attributed to the consumption of various fruits and vegetables, was realized.
