Hallelujah Acres DietPeople looking for a spiritual approach to diet and lifestyle might come across the Hallelujah Diet. Based on the biblical teachings of Genesis 1:29, The Hallelujah Diet claims a healthy and disease-free lifestyle by eating a vegan diet consisting primarily of "living food." People are advised to eat a diet comprising of 85 percent raw, organic fruits and vegetables and 15 percent cooked grains as well as supplements, vitamin B12, digestive enzymes and barley powder. Juicing is a significant aspect to the diet's regimen because the Hallelujah Diet believes that the body can absorb more nutrients and fiber that way. The diet restricts the consumption of animal products, sugar, caffeine, refined flour and seasonings. By coupling this very low-caloric diet with exercise, "spiritual well-being," adequate rest, and sunshine, the Hallelujah Diet claims significant weight-loss and a virtual elimination of disease. The FounderRev. George Malkmus started the Hallelujah Acres Ministry in 1992, which is home to the Hallelujah Acres diet, from of a 12-lesson course he began teaching out of his home. The course is called Biblical Nutrition 101, and Rev. Malkmus claims this course helped cure him of colon cancer. Medical StudiesNo studies have been done specifically on the Hallelujah Diet, but numerous studies have been conducted on the benefits and drawbacks of vegan and raw-foods diets. Unless carefully planned, the American Dietetic Association (ADA) has found vegan diets to be deficient in calcium, vitamin B12 and D, iron, and zinc, and can lead to diseases such as rickets or anemia, among others. Cautionary NotesExperts agree that a vegan, primarily raw-foods diet can lead to notable weight loss, but it may be dangerously lacking in vital nutrients and vitamins. The ADA warns that any vegan, raw-food diet not designed by a dietician runs the risk of not providing the nutrition that a human body needs. This diet is not recommended for children, the elderly or pregnant women. ResourcesThe Hallelujah Diet Workbook (Destiny Image Publishers) by George Malkmus and Peter Shockey |
